I had first gotten my taste of “real” dance music in 1988 after hearing Kraftwerk’s Musik Non Stop. After getting sidetracked with industrial, goth, hip-hop, shoegaze and post-punk, in 1990, MTV‘s 120 Minutes showed a clip of 808 State performing “Cubik” at a Manchester rave; I immediately set my sights on techno. In 1991, I was sent an early Mute comp, Paroxysm, to review for my zine, featuring Underground Resistance; Mad Mike Banks called me afterwards, sent some records, and left a deep, lasting impression. Shortly after, I found “From Beyond,” Carl Craig’s project as Psyche—almost a fusion of Kraftwerk and This Mortal Coil. Within weeks, our band, Body Release, formed with key Ohio players Titonton Duvanté, Charles Noel [Archetyp] and Mike Szewczyk, dabbling in techno, IDM, jungle and house before we embarked on our own paths. In 1993, via Brian Gillespie, I was introduced to Detroit’s Carl Craig and Daniel Bell, which resulted in releases with Peacefrog, Planet E and 7th City within the year. We started throwing our own events, in collaboration with Ed Luna, as ele_mental in May of 1993, and brought Detroit artists to Ohio and vice versa. My world hasn’t been the same since—and these photos document our cherished memories across the midwestern rust belt in pursuit of house and techno.

Tuesday, 25 January 2011 — The Oscar nominations are in, and The Kids Are All Right received Four Oscar nominations — including BEST PICTURE! “Kids” also received nominations for Best Leading Actress for Annette Bening, Best Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo, and Best Original Screenplay by “Kids” director Lisa Cholodenko & Stuart Blumberg.

We are honored to have a role in this Focus Features release and wish to publicly congratulate Focus Features and the film’s producers, Jeffrey Levy-Hinte of Antidote Films and director Lisa Cholodenko for having us help on the visual effects and end crawl for the film.

+ SCALE was approached by frequent collaborators Sub Rosa [AdAge’s Small Agency of 2010] in late June 2010 to create materials for an event GE hosted in early July, called Ecomagination. Celebrating its 5 year anniversary, the event showcased various energy technologies from wind power, nuclear recycling, and locomotive logistics management systems. + SCALE created 6 videos in HD, displayed on flat-panel plasmas, HD projectors on walls and a fabricated “cloudstream”.

GE: Offshore Wind Turbine
+ SCALE was delivered 2 images for this video; a photograph of 5 GE Wind Turbines and a photo-illustration from the April 2010 cover of Popular Science. For the first section of this video, + SCALE projection mapped the photograph onto rough 3d geometry, rebuilt the wind turbines, textured and lit the scene with a daylight lighting diagram, animated the turbine blades spinning, and added real wave footage [shot at the edge of a pier in Red Hook, Brooklyn] and moving clouds to the scene. In the second section, + SCALE cut apart the flat image of the Popular Science image and dismantled it into several layers that could be reverse-animated from a complete model, to an exploded view of the discrete components of the turbine.

GE: Rail Edge
RailEdge is an enterprise system for logistics control of railway fleets, from freight to passenger rail systems. This solution integrates software control of railway switches and tracks to maximize efficiency in delivery. + SCALE was supplied timelapse footage as shot by MSNG PCES and rebuilt the software control screens in 2d. This was then extruded in 3d to create camera movement that bridged the gap from the birds eye imagery of rail tracks to the overhead views from the software screenshots.


GE: ARC Prism
ARC, or Advanced Recycling Center, is GE’s solution for the further use of nuclear waste. PRISM, the Power Reactor Innovative Small Module, is a small reactor that takes depleted uranium waste and re-extracts uranium for the creation of new energy pellets from normal radioactive waste.

Shot in Venezuela, + SCALE was approached to realize the film’s transitional visual effects shots, title sequence, end credits and cast & crew end crawl. + SCALE’s director Todd Sines designed + animated the opening and ending credits, and supervised the visual effects shots in the film, composited by Charlotta Forssman.

Directed and produced by Vanessa Gould, this documentary explores the intertwined nature of art and science within the ancient art of paper-folding known as origami. With interviews with MIT scientists, professors, artists and theorists, the director shows a universal nature between art and mathematics; form and function.

This independently financed documentary went on to be acquired by PBS for the Independent Lens series, and a received a prestigious Peabody award in March 2010.
